Now in its fifth monochromatic installment, HUE will celebrate an entirely indigo evening on Friday, November 10. Join Art Noir for live music with DJ Mollie Git Down. Enjoy signature indigo cocktails (one free with ticket purchase) and nibble on indigo appetizers courtesy of Chef's Palette. In this episode of Radio Art Center, the Des Moines Art Center's Director of Marketing and PR Christine Crawford talks with artist Elizabeth Murray's daughter Daisy Murray Holman in anticipation of a film screening later this month.

Offered quarterly, each Artists on the Big Screen + Collection Conversation features a film about an artist or influential art personality followed by insight into the figure’s relationship with the Art Center’s collection.

The Art Center welcomes Daisy Murray Holman, Elizabeth Murray's daughter, who will introduce the film and participate in Q&A after the screening with Director Jeff Fleming. Murray's Sad Sack (1989) entered the Art Center's collection a year after it was created, at the height of her signature style.

In this episode of Radio Art Center, the Des Moines Art Center's Director of Marketing and PR Christine Doolittle sits down with Big Hair Ball chair Belle Du Chene to discuss the 2017 event. This year's Big Hair Ball theme will be Alchemy, inspired by the exhibition Alchemy: Transformations in Gold.

The Big Hair Ball, which began in 2004 and is hosted biennially, is one of the most highly anticipated events in the Des Moines area and statewide. Known for its modeled hairstyles, live music, and special performances, which celebrate hair as a form of artistic self-expression, the Big Hair Ball has been profiled extensively in local, state, and national media. The highlight of the evening is an hour-long choreographed runway program, produced entirely by local salons and a volunteer committee. Local boutiques also participate in the event by offering hair, nail, and make-up artistry to event attendees, which average more than 750.

Day of the Dead is a traditional Latino celebration that honors the lives of members of the community who have recently passed away, as well as a festive day of music, dancing, food and drink, art activities, and remembrances for the whole family.

The Des Moines Art Center will honor Mario and Simone Soria at this year's Day of the Dead celebration. Theirs is a love story of two people whose paths crossed in America after living rich and tragic lives on two different continents.

This year's event, which will be held on Sunday, November 1 from noon to 6 pm, will honor the memory of Aurora Bejarano Lumadue, a dedicated community volunteer who was active in many organizations including the Art Center's Day of the Dead committee.

The biennial fundraiser will be held Saturday, August 15 at the Des Moines Art Center from 8 pm – midnight. This year's event will feature a futuristic, space theme as well as a runway show put on by local hair salons.
